Overview

The Budapest Semester in Mathematics is offered during the fall and spring semesters to mathematics and computer science majors who have taken one semester of Hungarian.  Students either live in a homestay with a Hungarian family or in a furnished apartment with other program participants. Columbia encourages students to partake in the homestay experience.

Academic Program

Budapest Semesters in Mathematics provides a unique opportunity for North American undergraduates. Through this program, mathematics and computer science majors in their junior/senior years may spend one or two semesters in Budapest and study under the tutelage of eminent Hungarian scholar-teachers. The instructors of Budapest Semesters in Mathematics are members of Eotvos University and the Mathematical Institute of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, the two institutions known for having educated more than half of Hungary's highly acclaimed mathematicians. Most instructors have had teaching experience in North America and are familiar with the cultural differences. Students take four courses all of which are taught in English.

An optional intensive language course is offered about two weeks before regular classes begin. Columbia students are encourage to take advantage of this language training.

Program Features

Student have two different housing options

• Homestay with a Hungarian family: Families may have multiple members or simple one homestay "mother" or "father".
• Apartment with other program participants.

Eligibility

All students should consult the OGP eligibility page to ensure that they meet all specific academic requirements for each school (CC, GS, SEAS) to study abroad.
