Scholarships

There are a number of scholarships available for study abroad including:

Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship: This program is offered through the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State, and is administered by the Institute of International Education. These grants to study abroad provide assistance to undergraduates who are current recipients of federal student financial aid.

Bridging Scholarships: Administered by the Association of Teachers of Japanese (ATJ), the Bridging Scholarships are available for students who wish to study in Japan on semester-long or academic year programs. Recipients for Bridging Scholarships will receive stipends ranging from $2500 to $4000 depending on the length of their study program in Japan. The scholarships are funded by donations from several U.S. corporations and foundations.

BUTEX Scholarships: The British universities TransAtlantic Exchange Association offer scholarships of $1,000 to US –based students for study in the UK. To be eligible to apply you must have been offered a place as a study abroad or exchange student at a UK university which is a member of BUTEX.

DAAD Fellowships: The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) offers several study and research opportunities for both undergraduates and graduate students in Berlin, Germany.

David L. Boren Undergraduate Scholarships/NSEP: These merit-based scholarships are given to undergraduate students wishing to study abroad. They are available to all students for the semester, academic year, and available only to first and second years in the summer.

Freeman-Asia Award: The Freeman-Asia Program offers need-based scholarships for American students or permanent U.S. residents to study abroad in Asia.

Mary McNeill Scholarship in Irish Studies: This scholarship will be offered to a well-qualified student enrolled in the one year MA postgraduate degree course in Irish Studies at the Queen's University of Belfast.

North American Freshmen Scholarship – Summer University at Freie Universität Berlin-FUBiS 2004: The Freie Universität Berlin offers 25 North American Freshman Scholarships, applicable to the second Summer Session of the 7th International Summer University at Freie Universität Berlin (FUBiS 2004), which will take place from July 17 through August 13, 2004. These scholarships are sponsored to 100 percent by funds of the European Recovery Program.

Richard Lewis Kohn Fellowship: This grant supports study at the London School of Economics during the junior year abroad.

Rotary Ambassadorial and World Peace Scholarships: These competitive scholarships are available for undergraduates who have completed at least two years of study. Ambassadorial scholarships provide for programs such as one academic year abroad, or a three to six month intensive language training abroad. Rotary World Peace Scholarships offer opportunities for individuals committed to peace and cooperation to pursue a two-year master's level degree in international studies, peace studies, and conflict resolution at one of the seven Rotary Centers.

Simpson Scholarships in Egyptology: This scholarship provides an award of $2500 per semester (not to exceed two consecutive semesters) to undergraduate juniors and seniors who enroll in the Study Abroad Program at the American University in Cairo and concentrate their studies in Egyptology. Applicants must be accepted by AUC into the Study Abroad Program before April 15. Those receiving the award are required to enroll in a minimum of three Egyptology courses for each semester they are receiving the award and will be required to maintain a 3.3 GPA in these courses if the student wishes the scholarship to be renewed for a second semester.
