Congratulations on your decision to apply to Columbia in Beijing! Please select the appropriate link above to begin the application process. If you are not a student at Columbia or Barnard, please select Visiting Students.

The Office of Global Programs prefers that you complete the online application.

Applications are not considered complete until all components have been received.

IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT PASSPORTS: If you do not have a passport, or your passport will expire within the next year, please apply for one now. Currently it is taking up to four months to get a new or renewed passport. Even if you request that the passport be expedited, it can take several weeks.

Application Deadline

Spring term: October 1
Fall term/Academic year: March 1

How to Apply

All required application materials may be submitted as part of the online application, except for official transcripts. Complete applications are due by the deadline. A complete application consists of the following:

  • Completed online application form.
  • Statement of purpose (500 word statement about personal and academic goals and how you intend to achieve them). This may be uploaded into the online application.
  • Completed online study abroad approval form:
    • Barnard students: Dean should complete this form for you.
    • Columbia College students: Do not complete this form. Please see Dean to be cleared for study abroad.
    • General Studies students: Do not complete this form. Please see Dean to be cleared for study abroad.
  • Completed online faculty recommendation form.
  • Completed online language recommendation form.
  • Transcript. To expedite the admissions process, you will be asked to upload a scanned copy of your transcript into the online application. However, to complete the application you must submit an official transcript to the Office of Global Programs.
  • Writing sample from your most recent Chinese course (test or homework). You may upload a scanned copy of your writing sample into the online application.

  • Completed online study abroad approval form.
  • Completed online faculty recommendation form.
  • Completed online language recommendation form.
