Academic Program

The second-year track is split into two four-week sessions. The first session offers second-year French grammar, composition, and conversation. In the second session, students may continue with the second part of the grammar and composition course. Students can enroll in one or both sessions.

The advanced track is a six-week program where students determine their own course of study by choosing from:

  • Third Year Conversation
  • Introduction to Literary Study: From 1800 to the Present.
  • Literary Analyses of French Culture.
  • Medieval Art and Architecture
  • Issues in 19th-Century Art

Second-Year Track Courses

Second Year Track I

French H1201. Second-Year Grammar and Composition, I. 3 points
Prerequisites: One year of college French or the equivalent.

Prepares students for advanced French language and culture. Develops skills in speaking, reading, and writing French. Emphasizes cross-cultural awareness through the study of short stories, films, and passages from novels. Fosters the ability to write about and discuss a variety of topics using relatively complex structures.

French H1221. Second-Year Conversation, I. 2 points
Prerequisites: one year of college French or the equivalent.

Practice in conversational French, with emphasis on comprehension, pronunciation,and idiomatic usage. .

Second Year Track II

French H1202. Second-Year Grammar and Composition, II. 3 points
Prerequisites: French H1201 or the equivalent.

Prepares students for advanced French language and culture. Develops skills in speaking, reading, and writing French. Emphasizes cross-cultural awareness through the study of short stories, films, and passages from novels. Fosters the ability to write about and discuss a variety of topics using relatively complex structures.

Advanced Track Courses

Art History H3320. Medieval Art and Architecture. 3 points
Prerequisites: Two years of college-level French or the equivalent. One art history course recommended.

Lectures and discussions on French art and architecture during the Middle Ages. Students are expected to visit and report on Saint-Denis, Cluny, Nôtre-Dame, Chartres, Sainte Chapelle, and other sites. Overnight excursion to Poitiers.

Art History H3682. Issues in 19th-century art: Manet and modern Paris. 3 points
Prerequisites: Two years of college level French or the equivalent. One art history course recommended.

Establishes a context for studying American expatriate artists in Paris, 1900-40 (the accompanying seminar). The career of Edouard Manet and how he influenced the Impressionists, who in turn welcomed American painters in the subsequent period. Visits to museums, libraries, and historical sites in Paris; readings by Zola, Baudelaire, Mallarmé, and Duranty.

French H3131. Third-Year Conversation, I . 3 points
Prerequisites: Two years of college French or the equivalent.

Theoretical analysis of the phonemic, phonetic, and physiological characteristics of French speech. Concentration on the improvement of comprehension and speaking ability through oral presentations that focus on varied aspects of French civilization and culture.

French H3334. Introduction to Literary Study: From 1800 to the Present. 3 points
Prerequisites: Two years of college French or the equivalent.

Introduction to the scope and variety of French literature through the analysis of significant works and currents. Lectures, discussions, and close textual analysis. Some of the authors considered include: Hugo, Balzac, Flaubert, Beaudelaire, Zola, Rimbaud, Breton, Colette, Proust, Camus, Duras.

French H3405. Third-year grammar and composition, I. 3 points
Prerequisites: Two years of college French or the equivalent.

Systematic study of grammar, including morphology, syntax, semantics, and idiomatic expressions, designed to improve writing and other communication skills.

French H3625. Literary Analysis of French Culture. 3 points
Prerequisites: Two years of college French or the equivalent.

Ideology and politics in the literary texts of the 20th century, set within their social context. Relations between French and Francophone writers.

French Studies H3994. Paris Walks: Itineraries on the Architectural, Urban, Cultural History of Paris. 3 points
Prerequisites: Two years of college level French or the equivalent.

This class is mainly conducted in designated areas of Paris. Students use the city as their workshop for understanding the evolution of Paris as an architectural landscape and as a sociocultural space.
