Students looking for outside sources of scholarships or loans can check the following for more information. Columbia University is not affiliated with any of the sources.
If you are applying for a scholarship that requires your school's approval, please note that on-campus deadlines are often earlier than scholarship deadlines. Please check with your school's study abroad office.
Scholarships especially for KCJS, Japan or Asia
KCJS Scholarships
The KCJS Governing Board has allocated funds to create the KCJS Student Scholarship to benefit participating students who demonstrate the most financial need. These awards vary with need and offer up to $3,500 for recipients attending the full year and $1,500 for recipients attending one semester. Japan Foundation Scholarships of similar amounts are also available for single semester and full year students who demonstrate the most financial need. All students applying for KCJS scholarships are also required to apply for the following Bridging Project and Freeman scholarships.

KCJS students may also use Bridging Project Scholarships to attend KCJS. The Association of Teachers of Japanese Bridging Project at the University of Colorado at Boulder awards up to 30 scholarships to assist students with the travel and living expenses they will incur while studying abroad in Japan. For information on how to apply, eligibility regulations and deadlines, please check their website.
Freeman Awards for Study In Asia (Freeman-ASIA)

The Institute of International Education was recently awarded a generous grant from the Freeman Foundation to implement a new awards program designed to increase the number of American undergraduates who study in East and Southeast Asia. Awards will range from $3,000-$7,000 depending on the length of the program.
Students must demonstrate financial need in order to participate in the Freeman-ASIA Program. Priority will be given to students with no previous experience in Asia. As a condition of the award, upon their return to the U.S., students must agree to promote study in Asia by sharing their experiences with peers on their home campuses and in their communities.

General Scholarships
Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship

Sponsored by the US Department of State and the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship provides awards of up to $5,000 for U.S. citizen undergraduate students to pursue semester or academic-year long study abroad opportunities. To be eligible students must be receiving a Federal Pell Grant at the time of application. For more information, application deadlines and the online application, please visit the Web site above.
National Security Education Program (NSEP) David L. Boren Undergraduate Scholarships www.iie.org/nsep
Government-funded scholarships for study in areas of the world outside
western Europe, Canada, and Australia. Recipients are required to
fulfill a service requirement by working in higher education or for the
US government. Application available online. The national deadline for
applications is usually in mid February. However, most campuses have a
local representative to assist with the application process. Contact
your university's study abroad office to find out if your campus has an
earlier deadline.
