Culture and Society in Madagascar

A field study program designed for students to develop an in-depth understanding of the domestic and external influences that have shaped a Malagasy society. Madagascar has a long history as a trading nexus and migratory destination of people from Indonesia, the Arabian Peninsula, and other parts of Africa. The 18 distinct clans retain key elements of their heritage while sharing a common Malagasy culture and language.

The program base is Antananarivo, the scenic highland capital. A second homestay in Mahajanga, an easygoing city on the island’s northern tip, and a rural visit provide a deeper appreciation of the diverse Malagasy culture. Educational excursions to the north and south complement classroom and field study and expose students to the domestic and external influences shaping modern life in this island nation.
