Notes:
Salvador da Bahia, located on the Atlantic coast in northeastern Brazil, has 2.1 million inhabitants. Due to the strong slave presence during the Colonial period, Salvador has a strong African influence, including religious and spiritual practices, cuisine, and ethnic dynamics. Today Salvador is a booming city and its historic and ethnic diversity can be noted in the city’s architecture and layout: old parts of the city are next to modern complexes.
This program is designed for students with a interest in contemporary Brazil and Afro-Caribbean studies, as well as learning the Portuguese language. The program offers a combination of direct enrollment classes at a Brazilian university, Portuguese language courses, and core CIEE courses about contemporary Brazilian art, culture, race, and economic issues. While in Brazil, students live with host families and can get involved with the local community through volunteer projects, and through campus groups and activities. The program begins with a four-week Intensive Language and Culture Program (ILCP), held in Salvador da Bahia for the fall semester and in São Paulo for the spring semester.
Students should have either a strong Spanish language background, have taken Portuguese for Spanish speakers, or one year of Portuguese.
