Notes:

This field study program is designed for students to explore the multifaceted literary and artistic expressions in Peru, the nation with the largest Indian population in the Americas. Drawing upon historical legacy, multiethnic reality, and profound social and economic disparities, Peruvian creativity in many forms and venues serves as a voice of individual as well as communal identity. This is a nation renowned for producing important authors, poets, and artisans in an environment that includes major sites of archaeological and anthropological significance.

Based in the sacred city of Cuzco, students actively engage with these traditions through intensive Quechua language study and encounters with indigenous oralists, literary specialists, authors, artists, and artisans. Students also explore urban painting, architecture, regional literature, and contemporary theater in both the capital city of Lima and “revolutionary” Arequipa. A rural homestay with a Quechua-speaking family and a trip into the Peruvian Amazon increase opportunities for cultural analysis.
